Hello all ~

Personally, I don't get all that excited about attending benefits, so I understand if you cringe at this post. But bear with me for a moment. If you enjoy hanging with bohemian types. If you like knowing that you make a difference in the world. If you live in the area and want to support local, innovative, subversive art in a way that is fun and painless, this is the benefit for you!

No dressing up. No sycophantic actors trying to fit their heads in your bum. No constant begging for additional donations or auction/raffle bids. This is actually a low-key, lost-cost night of relaxing and playing games with me and the Tutians (who are an amusing group, let me tell you). It's easy and it's all for a worthy cause...helping to pay for my wedding dress!

I'd love to see you there. Details are below. Feel free to contact me with any questions ~

We’re excited to invite you – friends and strangers -- to our upcoming celebration of The Wedding and our whole new season of engaging entertainment. We invite you into the party, whether you are familiar with TUTA already or a first-time visitor into our land. We provide a welcoming and humorous environment for traveling from the familiar into lesser known places, times and genres.

Here is how one audience member put it, “I love that TUTA provides an accessible challenge. In each show, I get most of what’s going on -- enough to thoroughly enjoy the experience -- but honestly there is always some part I am still wondering about days later. It’s a good stretch.”

So, save the date of Sunday, November 15 for the Engagement Party!

The evening will feature drinks, wedding-themed games -- for the married and unmarried alike! -- and the chance to informally meet members of TUTA. The event will entertain you while helping to support us, via a recession-friendly $20 admission at the door. Of course, you can help us out anytime with an online donation.

Below are all the party logistics. Let us know if you have any questions or suggestions.

Don't forget to bring your friends along! Use the button at the bottom of this post to share it with your favorite social media site or good old-fashioned email. While you're at it - make sure you stay up-to-date on TUTA events by joining our Facebook group or following us on Twitter.

Support Your Local Songstress...

If we don't support our local artists...who the hell will? Stand up (or sit down and have a drink) for what you believe in...LOCAL ART!!!

Many of you know my roommate, [info]tarirocks, who is a talented (and sassy) singer/songwriter. If you've never heard her original music, I encourage you to listen to some of her free tracks here. The tracks don't really do her justice though, so it would be even better if you attended some of her upcoming gigs in October. I've listed details from T below. Enjoy!

*** October 5th, 8 pm at Silvie's Lounge (1905 W. Irving Park)
Silvie's does Acoustic Showcases every Monday night, where you can see five local acoustic acts. I've played here before, and it's actually a really cool, low-key room. Plus, it's just down the street from the Irving Park Brown Line stop, in case you want to get lit on a Monday!

*** October 11th, 3-5 pm at Argo Tea - St. Clair (550 St. Clair)
I love playing coffee and tea shops, mostly because they're such low key gigs....a couple hours to just hang out and rock out and play song after song after song after song. If you're hanging out downtown, why not stop in for some tea and listen to a couple songs? This tea shop is right off Grand, not far from Michigan Avenue.

*** October 27th, 9 pm at Wild Pug (4810 N. Broadway)
Wild Pug is a very cool LGBTQ-friendly pub in Uptown, and this Fall, they're running an Acoustic concert series featuring a bunch of local queer and queer-friendly acts (such as yours truly!).

While this Tennessee girl has become overly fond of spring and summer since living in Chicago ('cause there's just too much damned cold weather in these parts!)...my favorite season is fall. A lot of folks seems to share this love and all around me, people are making happy noises about the beginnings of fiery foliage and sweater season. The Farmer's market is a delight of rounded, russet glory as pumpkins, apples and gourds of every type are displayed in vibrant piles. Suddenly my tongue is dreaming of all the sweet, warm spices: cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, clove, anise, mace and cardamom. The fabric of love is shifting from summer silk and is knitting itself from sage, sienna and scarlet skeins.

I am bewitched by it all and in love with the richness of life. Along with many of my other "most favorite things", I see that the Mexican Fine Arts Museum is opening their annual Day of the Dead Exhibt next weekend. Their website touts it as the largest Dia de los Muertos exhibit in the nation! If you're going to be in town between September 25 and December 13, 2009 - I cannot recommend this experience enough (as I mentioned in a previous post from 2007). It is a stunning, sacred, marigold-clad honoring of the beloved dead and a joyfully-sorrowful herald of winter's coming sleep.

Songwriters' Showcase ~ Tari Follett and Last Chance Runaround

Saturday, August 29, 2009
7:00pm - 10:00pm
TUTA @ The Fulton-Carroll Center
2032 W. Fulton, Ste# F-263-A, Chicago, IL

Suggested donation of $5-15 to cover costs. Light snacks and soft drinks will be provided; BYOB!

For more information, contact TariRocks@gmail.com

It's an all-acoustic evening of singer-songwriter goodness with Chicago's own Tari Follett and special guests from sunny Atlanta - Last Chance Runaround! Come on out and support two independent acts and three talented musicians...

Tari Follett is a classically trained vocalist, a self-taught guitarist, and a bluesy folk-rock singer-songwriter. Since moving to Chicago in 2001, she's played both alone and with various other players in venues like Gunther Murphy's, Heartland Cafe, Subterranean, The Note, HotHouse, and the Beat Kitchen. She's played for fancy underground supper clubs, empty cafes on the South Side, fundraisers and benefits, and just about everything in between. Once she even got to write a song with Shakespeare (okay, not exactly with)!

Last Chance Runaround is a new musical combo hailing from Atlanta, Georgia. Singer/songwriter/guitarist Scott Roberts and harpist/vocalist Sue Volkert's partnership began in 2005 and was fueled by a mutual love for 1980s jangle-rockers Winter Hours as well as an instant admiration for each other. The duo have used their influences and friendship as a springboard for a rare and magical collaboration that has been the most productive and rewarding either of these veteran musicians have ever experienced. They are following up their 2005 self-titled EP and their appearance on the 2008 Winter Hours Tribute CD, A Few Uneven Rhymes, with the 2009 release of their debut full-length Alter Idem, a melodically-rich 12 song collection of Roberts originals and well-chosen covers. Last Chance Runaround hopes that the aptly named Alter Idem (Latin for "the same, but different") will be the aural equivalent of meeting a new and old friend simultaneously.

For those of you that love TUTA (and/or me)...here's a peak at our 09/10 season ~

TUTA’s 2009/2010 Theatre Season ~ “Young and Restless Brecht”

TUTA opens the season with Bertholt Brecht’s 1919 Bavarian folk comedy The Wedding, directed by Artistic Director Zeljko Djukic and featuring original music by Jesse Terrill ~

When nine middle class self-important guests converge on a young bride and groom’s apartment, each one slowly unravels the horrors of living a pretentious life. As the guests’ uptight facades collapse, a slapstick adventure full of extremely truthful physical and verbal humor is unleashed. Featuring live original music performed by the cast, The Wedding takes you through early Germany just after the fall of the Hapsburg Empire and in the face of rising Nazism on their borders.

The Wedding will run January 14 – February 14, 2010, at Chopin Theatre Studio, 1543 W. Division, Chicago. For Tickets call 847-217-0691 or go online to www.tutato.com.

In May, TUTA will present the World premiere of a new adaptation loosely based on Brecht’s Baal, directed by Zeljko Djukic, with music by Josh Schmidt (Adding Machine – A Musical) and libretto/book by Ugljesa Sajtinac (author of the critically acclaimed play Huddersfield). With this production, TUTA strives to musically enlighten the play of young Brecht known for its inaugural form and risky themes of stardom and power. A fusion of serious drama and music, this premiere will have a strong emphasis on the musicality of the words, saturating them with rhythm, harmony, sound and structures. Developed through company workshops, this collaboration brings forward an original score, full of surprises and frequent shifts in perspective that explore the value of the politically charged subject of arts in times of economic crisis.

"In Near Eastern mythology, Baal is a God of rainfall and fertility. In Weimar Germany, Baal was a subversive announcement of the approaching gallop of Nazism. For us today, he is a trickier figure. Like anything that has had social subversive appeal, the character of a drunken, nihilistic poet-musician, has repeatedly been sterilized with the commercialism of popular culture: the Vietnam War protests and Jim Morrison; the Civil rights movement and Bob Dylan. Most aesthetic monstrosities end up in safe hands. They sell. Perhaps theatre can bring a glimpse of the original danger?” ~ Artistic Director, Zeljko Djukic

Baal will run May 20 – June 20, 2010 at Chopin Theatre Studio, 1543 W. Division, Chicago. For Tickets call 847-217-0691 or go online to www.tutato.com.

This is a beautiful show and a rare opportunity to experience Chekhov as more than despair and frustrated whining. Djukic paints the human condition with a depth that is unique; sadness and joy, action and stillness, love and loss are blended in golden moments and performances that glow warmly against a dark canvas.

If you're interested, I'd recommend booking tickets in advance. The last two weekends might fill up quickly.

8th House Productions presents...

Working With Dreams to Strengthen the Soul
with Anne Hill

We all have questions we want answered, and fears we need to resolve. The great wisdom expressed every night through our dreams is our best guidance for all these concerns. Bizarre and troubling dreams especially bring healing energy for us, if we know how to access it. Understanding our dreams puts our worries to rest, builds wisdom, and helps strengthen our souls.

Dreams also open windows into the future, and help us see things from startling new perspectives. In this workshop we will use group dreamwork and shamanic dream techniques to dive into the world of dreams, find the treasure waiting there for us, and emerge stronger and more confident. We will create dream allies out of disturbing images, and learn how to be bold dreamers. All levels of dreamwork experience are welcome. Please come with an old or new dream to share, a journal, and a small object that evokes your dreams.

Hello dear ones -

TUTA Theatre Chicago is hosting our annual benefit and I'm hoping some of you might be interested in attending. If you follow my blog then you know a bit about TUTA; about the uniqueness and integrity of our work. This really is a special group of folks who are manifesting truly special work and as you can imagine - we are struggling in this economic climate.

If you believe in art and its ability to challenge the human mind, to inspire and to bring change into the world, please support TUTA as you are able. This benefit will be a blast (and I actually mean that - we know how to throw a good party) and/or you can catch our upcoming production of Uncle Vanya by A.P. Chekhov. It's a stunning show that was heralded as the best local production in the last year by the Chicago Reader and was so popular in its first run that we have remounted it.

This ain't your momma's Chekhov and you won't see this anywhere else in town. In fact, you may want to buy your tickets now since last year's run sold out so quickly and 2009 shows are already filling.

If you can't make it to either event but would like to support us (after all, we're very lovable as well as skilled), you can go to our website and make a donation. No donation is too small, every dollar and bit of love can make a difference and because we are a 501(c)(3) your contributions are tax deductible.

And to those of you who are able to make the benefit, I'll be there, whippin up tasty finger foods in a fabulous dress and dancin' shoes. Care to cut a rug with me?

Bring on the Season!

Today was the first Farmer's Market in Daley Plaza. It was lovely to stroll through and take in the beautiful, young plants and the first produce of the season. The purple-tipped asparagus winked suggestively and a few early tomatoes made a surprise appearance. Last year the season got off to a poor start (with low temps, little sun and too much rain). This year seems much better; there appear to be some new vendors and all the tables were much more full.

So it begins...I will fill my backpack with canvas bags and each Thursday will march down to the plaza to get produce for our household. While we like to grow our own food, it will be quite a while before our yard will begin to yield much beyond greens. The sunshine will kiss me, luring out my freckles. The plaza fountain will sing like a thousand ladies rustling their silk skirts while The Picasso looks on cryptically. Though commuting home with pounds of produce on each arm is not always a thrill, it is well worth the joy of living a little closer to my values.

One of the best milestones of my year has come...now I begin counting days until the blueberries arrive. :)

music

Last Friday I went with [info]tarirocks to see one of our favorite bands, Girlyman, at one of our favorite venues Old Town School of Folk Music. It was a great show and one that felt perfectly tailored to me because they a) played a Patty Griffin cover (Mary) and b) picked my request (artfully and loudly posed by myself and T at just the right moment) playing Amaze Me...a tune that has haunted me and my poor guitar for months now.

While being back at Old Town is always bittersweet (I miss my fiddle lessons and cannot afford to pick them up right now) it was wonderful to see live music and to walk home on a warm night, high on the Muse - aching to write my own tunes and serenade the world. While my slow progress often frustrates me, time with the guitar is feeding me more and more these days and I am making more of it (and am daring to play in front of other folks...watch out!). Both [info]tarirocks and [info]artemis112 are inspiring me to push my musical edges...so we'll see.

ZELJKO DJUKIC is Artistic Director of TUTA, where he has staged Heiner Müller's Quartet, Peter Handke's The Hour We Knew Nothing of Each Other, original adaptations of Caroll's Alice books and Saint-Exupéry's Little Prince, Pushkin's Mozart and Salieri, Jean-Luc Lagarce's Rules for Good Manners in the Modern World, Aristophanes' Birds, Dawkins' Still Life In Color, Markovic's Tracks, Lagarce's It's Only The End of The World, Chekhov's Uncle Vanya, Shakespeare's The Most Excellent Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet. Another Maria's Field Review

This view of my current show, from the Chicago Tribune, is less flattering in general but I like to post all the reviews to offer a diverse picture of the works with which I'm involved.

I found the title of the review interesting, since the "real Russians" who have seen the show have said that they loved the piece and have given us glowing feedback, including the playwright himself (the playwright is not a she as Mr. Jones suggests).

I will give Jones this, he is correct that the tone of the show was a directorial choice which the actors committed to. We (the actors) were playing the work as though it were one big tragedy when we first began but then moved into the world of dark, surrealist comedy. I stick by my directors though (particularly after reading some of Bogaev's other works). I think they were/are on target and Bogaev seems to have agreed.

I have pasted the entire textbehind the cut )

T. Thorn Coyle ~ Sex, Will and Magic: Opening to Life Power

A 2-day intensive March 7 & 8, 2009

Do you yearn to feel life force flowing through you?

Magic is the marriage of breath, will and desire. If our lives lack full access to any of these, our magic will not thrive. In this experiential workshop we will learn ways to tap the energy of life and sex, using this to strengthen our will and fuel our work.

Energy techniques, meditation and chanting will help us access life power, opening our lives to heightened awareness, energetic sensitivity, and a strong, magical will. Strength, love, and beauty will surely follow.
This workshop is open to anyone, no previous experience required. If you would like to bring more magic into your life, if you would like to open up the channels to your creativity, if you would like to access the life force that each of us has within us, please join us for this intensive.

T. Thorn Coyle

T. Thorn Coyle is a Magic Worker, Mystic, and Pagan. An internationally respected teacher and author, her work focuses on the alchemy that occurs when we open ourselves fully to our humanity in our quest for Divine knowledge. In combining art and science, magic and mystery, body and soul, practice and ecstasy, she has created a unique body of work that has touched the lives of many seekers, artists, activists, parents and other change-makers.

A student of the Craft for more than 25 years, she is an initiate of the Feri Tradition (her religious home), Reclaiming, and the Mevlevi Order of America. Thorn combines her esoteric studies, work with her Gods and Guides, and years of practice, to form a teaching that honors the fertile dark and the limitless light. Citing her primary influences as G. I. Gurdjieff and Victor and Cora Anderson, she continues her spiritual studies in many traditions.
Through individual spiritual direction, weekend workshops, tele-classes, and group study as well as her webblog and podcasts, Thorn provides insights on the multi-facets of our lives, from spiritual practice, mystic revelation, and personal awareness to politics, religious observance, and celebration. Musician, dancer, activist, poet, and author of Evolutionary Witchcraft, she makes her home near the San Francisco Bay.
